End of Season Recap and Updates

Motorsports Update

Another racing season has come and gone. It’s now Thanksgiving and it is officially cold here in New England. This past season was great for us here at Project 240. We attended 2 hill climb competitions with the New England Hillclimb Association (NEHA) and 7 Autocross events with NER/SCCA. Thankfully, there were no injuries or major car failures at any event this year. Well, we did have some trouble with the tow vehicle, but hey, what do you want for a $2,000 truck? Since I like to keep detailed records, here are some interesting facts regarding this year’s season:

Number of Team Members: 6 Active, 10 total.
Total Number of Events Attended: 11
Total Number of Events Participated: 9
Total Miles Towed: 380
Total Miles Raced: 20
Total Miles Driven: 1050
Best Position: NER AutoX: 2nd (Event 10 Full Runs)
Worst Position: NEHA Ascutney Hillclimb #2: 5th in Class, 34th Overall

Not bad for our first full season. Personally, my favorite event was the Ascutney Hillclimbs. The venue is very beautiful and the road is amazing. Not to mention the people running and managing the event were friendly and incredibly helpful. If you haven’t already, check out the Mt. Ascutney Hillclimb Highlights video. This was the first season where there was no major work done to the car aside from general maintenance. Overall, I’m very happy with the way it performed, but there are some areas for improvement.

First up, a roll bar must be installed for safety. Second, at the hillclimbs, the combination of the Yokohama ES100 tires and the KAAZ differential equaled a whole lotta wheelspin. For next season, I am replacing the Yokohama tires with something more race ready. I have 2 options in mind, Dunlop Direzza D1 Star Spec or Falken RT-615 Azenis. Both should help in the grip department. The final area to address is the nut behind the wheel. I’ll work that out as the new season begins.

Site Updates

The idea of Project 240 is to document the build of the race car and any motorsports tomfoolery we wanted to share. But with the car “complete”, all that is left is motorsports. So, over the course of the winter, this site will change from a build site to more of a motorsports diary our local motorsports team, Club 23. You will be able to reach this site from either http://www.project240.org or http://www.club23racing.org.

This is more of a cosmetic change. Any new work on the project will be chronicled along with other members cars. Also, the site will make liberal use of the many many hours of video we shoot but never really do anything with. So look for the changes to start soon after the holidays.

Dyno Results

I know, I know, I posed about the Dyno session almost a month ago now. The session went so well, I’ve spent all my time driving. Without further ado, here is the dyno sheet

Dyno Graph

The sheet is a bit ruffed up, but that’s because I was so proud I was showing it off to everyone I met. Now the numbers may seem low, and they are. This is due to the dynometer used at DENT. Their Dyno Dynamics is a load-bearing dyno. These dynos read lower that inertia type dynos as they represent true horsepower at the wheels as if you were driving on the road. To put the results into perspective, the initial pull was 153hp. In the end, the 30+ whp gain is wonderful.

On the Dyno

The car is a joy to drive, even more so. The driveability has increased dramatically and the power output is linear and easy to handle. This is the way these engines should come out of the box. I’m very happy with the results and would recommend DENT to anyone.

Even more Subaru RWD News

So, it seems the new Subaru Impreza will be going RWD sooner than expected. According to AutoExpress, the RWD Subaru/Toyota will in fact be the next Impreza model. This new Coupe will see RWD in the base model, with 2.0 NA boxer motor producing approx 180whp with the range topping STI Coupe using the usual 2.5 Turbo motor producing 300bhp. In keeping with the current US trend, the Coupe will be of the hatchback variety as the picture above shows. 2010 cannot come soon enough

Subaru RWD coupe will be sold worldwide, Toyota version only in Japan

I was perusing Autoblog, like a do every day and found this lovely bit of news:

Inside Line is reporting that the new, RWD coupe being developed by Subaru and Toyota will only be sold as a Subaru in markets outside of Japan, while the Toyota version will remain exclusive to the Land of the Rising Sun. The report goes on to say that the coupe will be based off the Subaru Impreza (despite Toyota/Subaru’s own press release saying that it’s an “all-new” platform) and that power will be provided by a naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter boxer engine producing 220 hp at 6,500 rpm.

Toyota and Subaru are using the Integra Type-R as the performance benchmark for the new coupe, with a 103-inch wheelbase, a 2+2 seating layout and a curb weight of 2,866 pounds. As reported before, the coupe will debut in 2011 and pricing is expected to begin just south of $20,000.

This is very exciting for me. I am a huge Subaru fan, as my daily driver is a 2006 WRX. The future is looking very good for RWD fans. With Nissan, Hyundai, now Subaru/Toyota producing low cost RWD coupes, the 2010 and 2011 model years are going to be great!
